Getting use to the new me is a journey too

I want to start by saying that I dont regret shaving my head. I do believe it was necessary as part of my healing. But today I find myself wavering in my self-image. Wondering if I can ever let myself truly be. I spend so many years hiding and not letting people close. Especially men. I know that there is always going to be good days and bad for everyone not just for us that live with alopecia. And I know that our "battle" sometimes makes it that much more tougher. Im not looking for sympathy… Continue

'Why do you shave your head?'

I started to post this as a response to the question “Why do you shave your head?,” which Pam Fitros asked this Alopecia World group. I posted this blog instead because I wanted to share my answer with the entire community.

Back in 2010 I saw an advertisement for “It’s All Good Hair,” a “natural hair” workshop and celebration sponsored by the Shrine…

Help! I need a hat!

Hello All,
As we all know the seasons are changing and it will soon be time to cover up our bald heads. I have a problem. I have a very small head and have been unable to find any adult hats besides baseball caps that fit. Does any one have any suggestions?

The wind

Many people will tell you how the wind in your hair feeling is great. But for someone like me who has alopecia areata, I see the it differently. Since I have bald spots on my head its generally not very noticeable but when the wind blows then it reveals. I used to always wear a hat whenever I go outside but now I'm not as self conscious. If its very windy outside then I would wear a hat.

An UP for people feeling DOWN on here!

so as i scroll through the blogs i notice some of us are still having trouble coping with what we have, u people do not need to be ashamed and let it effect your life, maybe in a cancer situation but we are not dying from this, yes it could be worst but it is not, i know it is traumatic for some of us but as humans we learn to adapt to things, we may feel uncomfortable sometimes but it will not be forever, for u married alopecians i can tell u that the man/woman fell in love with u for u and no… Continue

Dear support group leaders

I would like to start a support group in Indianapolis, IN. I do have the support of NAAF. However, I would like to get all the insight and advice I can get from experienced support group leaders. Help me to have a great support group from the very beginning. Tell me things that you had to learn along the way that you wish you would have known from the beginning. Tell me about your mistakes that you would want me to learn from. I'm planning to launch the support group in Sept for Alopecia… Continue

A big thank you

I'm sure I am one of hundreds of you that want to say this but, thank you Alopecia World.

With out this wonderful site my alopecian days would be a little harder, the looks in the supermarket would sting a little stronger, the windy days on the soccer field with 18 girls would never happen, my confidence to walk on a tennis court in just a scarf would not be there, I would not have these wonderful friends that I feel so safe sharing my feelings that I never had before AA, I wouldn't have… Continue

Human Beings!

So what. No hair. Once you are no longer relating to the world like high school, wanting a model or wanting validation about your own looks, you know you will be looking for some human qualities in others that please you and make you comfortable.

We all know that silly list that goes on dating sites about eye color, hair, body type etc. They never ask the real questions.

Likewise, when caught up in alopecia fears, maybe we lose sight of what it is WE have to give… Continue

It's about to be raining on my bald head

So this is going to be pretty short and random. Its 2 weeks ago today that I shaved my head, and the first day since then that it has rained. I was told rain feels really good on a bald head by like 4 different people. I asked if it was like taking a shower...but I was told no, its different, LOL I don't see how, but soon, I will find out. I feel like a dork, but I cannot wait for work to be over so I can walk to my car and feel rain on my bald head, LOL. Oh the little things in life that bring… Continue

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a relatively new psychology method to help people deal with issues in their lives. I encourage those who are having a hard time coping with their hairloss to research this method of therapy. "Get Out Of Your Mind And Into Your Life" and "The Happiness Trap" are two of a few books on this topic and there is plenty of information online about it. Psychologically speaking I've never found doctors very helpful in aiding their patients cope but this method… Continue

Day 4:::: BAD HAIR DAY :)

Today is day 4 of Bald life. Today is defiantly tough for me. First my daughter asked me to wear a scarf to her school. I agreed. When I got to the train station I decided I was not comfortable with it. So I took it off while she wasn’t looking. She did not notice for 2 minutes as we were talking about a picture and walking. The train came and she looked up at me and tears ran down her face. She asked , you’re not going to my school like that are you? I explained to her that I did not feel… Continue

Another sucessful NAAF meeting

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone had a great summer!

With the changing of seasons, I find myself with harmony.

Many of us went to Indianapolis in June for the annual NAAF Conference and had our chance to get together with old friends and meet new ones. It was exillerating!!!

Tonight we had our local NAAF Support Group Meeting and it was so nice to get back together with fellow alopecians. It always feels so good for me!

It's been quite the journey. Good days with a few bad… Continue

'What's so brave about being bald?'

How would you respond to the following quote by Gail Porter?

I've just come back from Vietnam where I did a trek for the Children's Trust, a charity for children with brain injuries and life-threatening injuries. So it does help you put things in perspective. Some magazine, which I won't name, put me up for bravery awards. What's so brave about being bald?…

I have eyebrows!

So I went on Saturday and had my eyebrows tattooed on! I LOVE THEM!! Best thing I have done for myself in a while (besides shaving my head)!! It hurt, I'm not going to lie about that. I have 2 tattoos on my back and those sort of hurt, well the eyebrows, THEY HURT!! I had half of my left eyebrow missing (the tail as the tattoo artist called it) and on the right, a huge chunk of the thick part is missing. Well for some reason the area where the huge chunk is missing did NOT want to take the ink.… Continue

Off Topic.. Ex Boyfriends

This is completely off topic and doesn't have to do with hair but I have to write about this to get it off of my chest. I don't understand why ex-boyfriends want to stay in contact at times. I have heard several times that men & women can't be just friends especially if they have slept together & I believe it. One of my ex-boyfriend's and I broke up a little over a year ago (This was our second time of being together, I have known him for about 6 years). He wanted to stay friends after… Continue

Bald is bold, shiny is super!

Since I started shaving my head I have not only fallen in love with the look and feel, but I have become increadibly anal with getting the "perfect" shave. The first few times were kind of iffy, but from those experiences I have learned what works. Some of these tips may or may not help you, but it will put you on the right track.

My current routine consists of showering first thing in the morning. Using a loofa i lightly clean my scalp. I then let the warm water rinse my scalp for a… Continue
