Acceptance

I firmly believed I had reached a place of genuine acceptance. A place where it was no longer "Why me? Who is this foreign creature staring at me in the mirror?" but "I am beautiful and I am the same Val that I was with hair". Yesterday evening shattered this impression. I was at Bible Study at church, a place I had not gone in a while. I kept making excuses that really covered up how embarrassed I was and the fact that I did not love the new Val. Last night I decided it was long past time to… Continue

Hair or no hair, it sure is cold in Scotland today!!!!!!!

I drove up to Scotland this morning. Boy is it cold up here today.

The weather was terrible on the way up with lots of rain in Lancashire then lots of snow through Cumbria. It really was a bad journey but then again not as bad as it could have been. The temperature has been really cold so I am just so glad that I have a thin covering of hair at the moment. To be completely hairless is not too good when it’s so cold. Roll on next spring when it will get warm enough to have no… Continue

Awarenes not Ignorance

I'm trying to bring awareness to those who lack the knowledge of what Alopecia is and how it affects those(children to adults) who live with it everyday of their lives.

So, I've started a discussion via SocialVibe.com (I'm an active member)to ask the website to ad Alopecia to their list of causes.

A Total Conundrum

Okay so last night I was in the shower and got to thinking ( oh I know, best place to be contemplating huh?) So anyway I was washing my face and making sure I got my new temporary tatoo eyebrows all off and thought- sometimes I just feel so fake! I am totally cool with my appearance don't get me wrong. I wear my wig and make-up to work and special nights out. Other than that it is a baseball cap or just my shiny bald head LOL. But there is this feeling I get when I meet people that don't know I… Continue

And another....

It is a human hair wig. I realized that one of these days, I was going to forget to take off the other ones at work and melt it (synthetic). Now, I don't have to worry about it!

Would anyone like to speak at my school for a program???

Hello everyone!

So as I said before, I attend Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. I would like to have a program (event) next semester (spring 09) focused on "What is beautiful." (got the idea from a vid I saw). I think that it would be a great idea to spread some awareness on campus. I've only met one person (my roomate) that knows what Alopecia is, and that's because her sister has it. Basically, I would like to have a panel also including maybe 3 young ladies and maybe a man,… Continue

Flo & Me

Today I wore Flo, my wig, and we had a blast!

I was so excited that those who did not know what I have been going through did not know that she was a wig. That really boosted my confidence today.

However, that does not hold a candle to the compliment I received today. I am really open about the AA. If anyone asks why I have on a hat I tell them that I have AA. Pretty quickly all the little old men and ladies at the retirement community where I work knew and most were really… Continue

Relecting the last year..

Today I find myself feeling sad and weepy while my 6 year old daughter with Alopeica just loves life and enjoys doing all the fun things that kids do. Dare to tell her she needs to miss a day of school and tears start to roll down her cheek. Tell that I am not buying a webkinz today at the mall because she too many and her eyes begin to water. Tell her can't skate today because her skates are too tight a waterfall comes down her face. Tell we are out of paper so she can't draw and she gets sad.… Continue

Insurance woes for my five year daughter with AA!

What is the norm when it comes to what insurance will help pay for Alopecia treament. I have a five year old daughter and the insurance said they will not pay for any testing or treatment related to Alopecia. I am mad because she has not even been tested for anything yet (thyroid, lupus, blood sugar, celiac disease etc), and they are already giving us a hard time. I know treatment will be expenisve, and it is not like this is a fifty year old man losing his hair or something. We do not have… Continue

Bad re-growth day, Part 2

Well, I spent the whole Thanksgiving weekend from Friday night onward in bed with a migraine and scalp pain that has just been excruciatingly out of this world and left me totally incapacitated. I was going to wait until after the holidays to talk to Todd about cutting off all my hair again, because that has been the only way I have been able to control both the scalp pain and the migraines, but this weekend left me no other choice but to bring it up. The moment I mentioned it to him, Todd said… Continue

Bad re-growth day!!!

If it weren't for the fact that I agreed to let my hair grow back in because Todd asked me to, I would be sitting here enjoying a bald head, free of irritation, inflammation, and all around discomfort because I can't stand how having hair on my head feels -- it's hot, itchy, and I'm too lazy to spend the time styling it when it does finally grow out enough to do anything with it.

I'm going to wait til after the holidays, then Todd and i will have the discussion again about taking it… Continue

Gluten Intolerance

Not sure if I've got this blog thing figured ,but here it goes...

I was curious about AU and AT I've lost almost all my hair and my brows were falling out. The story behind that, is advice from an allergy specialist. I have intestinal problems so on my last visit to my gastro Doc he says "Have you changed your hair." I smiled and told him whats been happening. He immediately refered me to an allergy specialist.

On my visit with this Doctor, she explained that 40% of alopecia… Continue

Warm for the winter but is it going again?

Winter is here. As the temperature has dropped I have appreciated more then ever that I have had virtually full re-growth. My hair is now cut to a number 3 and has grown back all over my head apart from a small patch on the left side. I say that but did it not grow back completely and then it has it fallen out again? I’m not sure. There is also a slight shortage of hair over my ears on both sides but compared to how it was before I shaved my head last year it is brilliant and so warm compared… Continue

Thanks

Since it's Thanksgiving I decided that giving thanks was in order. I have so much to be thankful for!

- my wonderful family that has been by my side and helped me so much. Specifically my mom who has listened to me cry and shaved my head when I asked her to.

- the opportunity I have to go to college. I am so happy that I live in a country that allows me to pursue my education and allows me to do and become anything that I want.

- this wonderful country - I can't even imagine… Continue

Don't Cry For Me Alopecia

Hello Friends,

As you might know I am writing a few Christmas Carrols with an Alopecia Twist. Refer to a post a week back. Carrols across Alopecia World. My first entry was based on the Twelve Days of Christmas here's my second song of the season.

Don't cry for me Alopecia
The truth is I never loved you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Dont keep your distance
